This weekend marks the height or the time honored end of ski season ritual known as pond skimming. Also known as slush cups or a slush huck, pond skimming is truly a rite of Spring at many major ski resorts around the world.

Pond skimming is fun for all! It is very entertaining to watch and an exciting challenge for those who participate. For those interested in participating in an event, here’s are a few tips:

First, be sure that you know where and when to register. It will be embarrassing to show up in your bathing suit or Spring costume only to find out that the event is full. Next, for best points and crowd delight, choose a unique costume. As a general rule, the bigger the splash the bigger the points. Best technique, tips up, even weight, gain maximum speed before hitting the water, go straight! Waxing your skis help maximize the water resistance and can make the difference of staying dry or taking that shockingly cold splash down into the pond. This coming weekend pond skimming is taking place at Cannon Mountain, Wildcat Ski Area, and Sunday River. Nearby Wildcat’s event takes place this Saturday, April 13th. Registration begins at 8:30 AM and ends at noon. This event is very unique as they will let you skim as many times as you wish from 1 PM until 2 PM.

One of New England’s biggest pond skimming events with a unique double pond challenge is the Sunday River Pond-A-Palooza extravaganza. This event is also taking place this Saturday, April 13th.

The weather forecast for this Saturday events looks awesome. A very warm and sunny day is expected Saturday which will be conducive for Spring skiing and pond skimming. We have room at the Inn, come on up and watch or participate in one of the fun events. Welcome to the Royalty Inn!
